Terms of Service

Back to Home

Last updated: October 3, 2026

1. Agreement to These Terms

These Terms of Service are an agreement between you and Edgeway Software (“we”, “us”), the independent software studio that builds and runs Playstockfish.com (the “site”). By using the site — with or without an account — you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle information, and the credit terms shown when you buy credits explain those purchases in brief. Both sit alongside these terms.

2. Who Can Use the Site

3. Your Account

Much of the site works without an account. Some features, and buying credits, need one. You can create an account with an email address and password, or with Google sign-in where it is offered. If you sign in with Google using an address that already has an account here, you are signed in to that same account.

4. Free Uses and Free Credits

Some features let visitors without an account try them a limited number of times. That allowance is counted per internet connection and comes back after a period without use. New accounts may also receive a one-time grant of free credits.

Free uses and free credits are promotional. How many are offered, and which features need an account, can change or end at any time, and free credits have no cash value. They are meant to be one per person: we may decline to grant free credits to further accounts opened from the same connection, and we may remove free credits, or close accounts, obtained by opening multiple accounts or otherwise working around these limits.

5. Credits and Payments

Credits are non-refundable and never expire. Once bought they stay on your account until you spend them.

What a credit is

Credits are site credit for features that cost us something to run each time you use them, such as questions to the AI coach, spoken Stockfish Talks commentary and some of the training tools. The site shows what each feature costs before you use it. Credits are not money: they have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for cash, and cannot be transferred, sold or shared between accounts.

Refunds

Credits are digital content made available immediately, so a purchase is final and is not refundable, whether the credits have been spent or not, except where the law requires otherwise. If a purchase was charged in error — a double charge, or credits that never arrived — contact us and we will put it right.

When something goes wrong

If a paid feature fails on our side — for example, the AI service does not answer — the site is designed to return the credits for that request automatically. If you believe you were charged for something you did not receive, contact us and we will look into it.

Prices

Prices, pack sizes and what each feature costs in credits can change. You pay the price shown at checkout, and a change never takes credits off a balance you have already bought.

Payment

Payments are processed by Stripe, and Stripe’s own terms apply to the payment. Your card details go straight to Stripe and are never held by this site. If you dispute a charge with your bank instead of contacting us, we may suspend the account while the dispute is open and remove the credits from that purchase if the charge is reversed.

Closing your account

Credits belong to the account that bought them. Deleting your account gives up any credits still on it, and they cannot be moved to a new account.

6. AI Coaching and Commentary

Ask AI in Coaching and the Stockfish Talks commentary in Play Stockfish use AI language models provided by third-party AI companies, and spoken commentary uses a third-party text-to-speech service. To produce an answer, the question you type and the position and moves involved are sent to that provider. Please do not include personal or sensitive information in your questions.

7. Engine Analysis and Ratings

Stockfish and our other engines run inside your browser. Evaluations, best moves, move grades such as “Blunder” or “Brilliant”, accuracy figures and Elo estimates are automated estimates: they depend on the settings you choose, how deeply the engine searches and the speed of your device. They are not official ratings, and the site is not affiliated with FIDE, US Chess, Chess.com, Lichess or any other rating body.

8. Fair Play

This site is for training, study and play against engines. Do not use any part of it — engine analysis, the coach, or anything else — for help during a game you are playing against another person, whether online, over the board or by correspondence, or in any way that breaks the fair-play rules of the platform or event you are playing in. You are responsible for any consequences you face elsewhere for doing so.

9. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

10. Your Content

Your content is what you put into the site: games you paste or import, questions you ask the coach, feedback you send, and your username. You keep ownership of it. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, process and transmit it as needed to run the site — for example, to send a question to an AI provider for an answer, or to keep your puzzle progress, Elo history and the games you finish against Stockfish on your account. You must have the right to submit whatever you submit.

If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them to improve the site without owing you anything for them.

When you import games by Chess.com or Lichess username, your browser fetches those public games directly from that site, and that site’s terms apply to them.

11. Our Content and Open-Source Software

The site’s design, text, graphics and code, and the way its content is selected and arranged, belong to Edgeway Software, except for the open-source software and third-party content described below. You may use the site for your own personal, non-commercial chess study and play, and you are welcome to share links to it and the games and positions you study.

12. Third-Party Services

The site relies on other companies to work: Stripe for payments, Google for sign-in where it is offered, Cloudflare for the bot check at sign-up, AI and text-to-speech providers for the AI features, Chess.com and Lichess for game import, and public content networks for fonts, icons and the chess engine. Their own terms and privacy policies govern your use of their services, and we are not responsible for their availability or content. Links to other websites are provided for convenience only.

13. Changes to the Site

We are always working on the site. We may add, change or remove features, change which features need an account or cost credits, change free-use allowances, or take the site offline for maintenance, at any time. We do not promise that the site will always be available or free of errors. If we decide to close the site for good, we will post notice on it in advance wherever we reasonably can.

14. Closing Accounts

You can stop using the site at any time. To have your account deleted, email us at support@edgewaysoft.com from the address on the account. Deletion is permanent and removes your account, its history, its feedback and any credits on it.

We may suspend or close an account, or restrict access to the site, if we reasonably believe it has been used to break these terms, to commit fraud, or in a way that puts the site or other people at risk. Where an account is closed for breaking these terms, any credits on it are forfeited, to the extent the law allows. The sections of these terms that by their nature should continue — such as ownership, disclaimers and limits on liability — continue after an account is closed.

15. Disclaimers and Liability

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or the accuracy of any analysis, evaluation, rating or AI-generated content.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Edgeway Software is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill — or lost games and rating points — arising from your use of the site. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for credits in the twelve months before the claim, or US $20.

If your breach of these terms or of the law leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, to the extent the law allows.

16. Your Rights and Governing Law

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the consumer protection laws of the country where you live that cannot be waived by contract. Where such a law does not allow one of the exclusions or limits above, that exclusion or limit applies only as far as the law permits.

If you have a problem with the site, please contact us first — most things can be put right quickly. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the state in which Edgeway Software is based, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be settled informally will be decided by the courts of that state, unless the consumer laws of your country give you the right to bring proceedings where you live.

17. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always on this page with its “Last updated” date. For significant changes we will give notice on the site, or by email to account holders, before they take effect. If you keep using the site after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms. A change to these terms never takes away credits you have already bought.

18. General

These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and the credit terms shown at purchase, are the whole agreement between you and us about the site. If any part of them is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up. We may transfer these terms to anyone who takes over running the site; you may not transfer them without our permission.

19. Contact Us
